A new mobile phone security suite is promising to offer users the ability to remotely lock down their stolen handset and wipe all the data contained on it, thereby rendering it virtually useless to a thief.The latest version of San Francisco-based software company Kaspersky’s Mobile Security package will also let users find their phone via GPS, send an alert to its owner if its Sim card is removed or changed, and even send a text advising anyone else using the phone that a reward is available for its safe return.There is also a raft of new measures aimed at safeguarding smartphone owners’ privacy, including the ability to hide information about any sensitive or confidential contacts. This allows a user to not only wipe their details from the phone’s address books, but also to remove all traces of them from call logs and SMS records.Concealed contacts can be revealed by entering a password, and details of incoming calls and messages can be accepted while their details are kept hidden, or added later when the user returns the phone to normal mode. Manual privacy settings can also be activated for individual contacts using the application’s interface, automatically after a predefined period of inactivity or remotely by sending a special text message to the phone owner’s own number.Director of Mobile Services at Kaspersky Lab, Sergei Nevstruev, said the new security offers unprecedented levels of privacy protection for mobile phone users, and better safeguards against data loss and unwanted calls and texts.He pointed out that smartphones contain more personal data about their owners, their movements and their contacts than ever before, much of which the owners would understandably want to remain private. The new suite is also promising comprehensive protection against malware and network attacks, and lets parents monitor their children’s activities on their phones, as well as providing information on their whereabouts.And like a PC, it has an anti-spam capability, which in this case blocks unwanted calls and text messages. It can also encrypt important documents, keeping them away from prying eyes and making them accessible only by inputting a password.Because people are now putting more information than ever about themselves onto their smartphones, privacy protection is taking on new levels of importance, Nevstruev said. The Unconference – Two Feet Into the Business World
With the Internet and the online world comes a brand new vocabulary to get our heads around – concepts with new names seem to be being created daily, and we all know that ‘tweeting’ has nothing to do with birds. The latest utterance to find its way into the mouths of the internet-savvy is the term ‘unconference’. In a nut shell, an ‘unconference’ is a conference that tries hard to be as little like a traditional conference as possible. Sound confusing? It’s really not. It’s a participant-driven gathering that is centered on a theme or purpose, without things like sponsorship or normal fees. The crowd does the presenting, and hired speakers are replaced with, well, anybody that wants to have their say. The people that want the conference event are the people that organize, plan, participate it, and run the event.Sort of makes sense, doesn’t it? Why scour conference event listings searching for one that is relevant to your interests, then have to pay a hefty fee to listen to people that may or may not even interest you – when you can gather your posse and organize one yourself, for little or no cost. It puts an end to passive listening, and in the great tradition that the Internet has created, everyone can be involved. All attendees and organizers of an unconference are encouraged to become participants, and have their say. Talk about freedom of speech.In the beginning…The international ‘Barcamp’ conference event was one of the founding events that legitimized unconferences and changed them from a bunch of friends chatting to a legitimate conference-style public event. The first one was held in 2005 with 200 participants, and was organized in less than one week. Barcamp is organized by its attendees through the Internet with a collaborative website, and is centered round a range of topics that interest the public, from health care to politics. All Barcamp attendees are asked to facilitate or present a session, as is in the tradition of a true ‘unconference’, and participants are encouraged to share their thoughts and learning to others during and after the event, openly rebelling against the more traditional concept of a conference, where only the fee-paying attendees get exclusive access to the information shared there.The Law of Two FeetThe idea behind the unconference can be put into one sentence, which is in fact something conference-goers call ‘The Law of Two Feet’, which states that ‘If during the course of the gathering, any person finds themselves in a situation where they are neither learning nor contributing, they must use their two feet and go to some more productive place’. Just as Twitter has done with celebrity private lives, unconferences are taking something that was previously thought of as restricted and limited, and making it into something that by its very definition needs everyone and anyone’s involvement to work.There is of course some sort of structure to each unconference, or else participants would probably be in danger of being bombarded with advertisers or entrepreneurs using the ready-to-listen group to their own advantage. Instead, at the beginning of an unconference, organizers usually take to the stage (whether physical or virtual) and share their expectations for the event. Sometimes a pre-chosen ‘topic leader’ will organize the topic suggestions from attendants and get things started. Surveys may have been given out to participants a few weeks before to get feedback and help to ‘shape’ the conference event to what the participants want it to be. Generally various types of ‘sessions’ exist within the unconference, with popular ones being ‘the show and tell’, whether a presented demonstrates a new gadget, idea or concept to the crowd. Then there is the ‘Learn how to do X’ session, where the presenter teaches a skill, and then there are the simple discussions and talks, and plenty more. Having said all of this, however, the structure of the unconference is left mostly up to the participants themselves, and so to be successful, an unconference needs participants that want to learn and teach and are happy to actively participate.Buzz your business with an unconferenceSo how does this apply to your business? Firstly, to attend an unconference means that you get the opportunity (without the fees) to socialize and network with others within your industry. Not only can you obviously listen to others’ thoughts and information that can help your business, but you get the chance to present yourself, sharing your ideas and hopefully gaining the interest of some prospective clients. Not that you should use your opportunity to present to stage a 15-minute advertisement or plug for your company – but as businesses use social networking tools to ‘join the discussion’ rather than promote their business, you can participate in the discussion at an unconference and build a position for yourself amongst your peers and within that community.Secondly, why not organize your own unconference? There are countless websites explaining the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’, and the best thing is that once you have gathered your eager participants, it organizes itself – the very idea is that it is a conference event that is easy to organize with minimal cost. Plus not only do you give yourself the opportunity to interact with your peers, but you are positioning yourself within the industry and building your business’ reputation.The ‘unconference’ is building upon the concept of civic involvement that the Internet has provided endless opportunities for. As we take the previously exclusive nature of a costly conference and turn it into an opportunity for discussion within an open public forum, then we give, and are given, the opportunity to teach and learn from each other – and what could be better than that.
